ETH Medal 2025
Congratulations to Hanna Blum for her excellent Master thesis with the title "Genetic determination of self-compatibility and determinate growth habit in common buckwheat".
In her Master thesis, Hanna identified genome regions controlling self-compatibility and determinate growth habit, traits that have kept away buckwheat from more uniform ripening, more stable yields and, hence, larger-scale adoption in agriculture. On the long run, Hanna’s work will help to bring buckwheat back on our fields and tables, thereby contributing to more diverse agricultural and food production systems in Switzerland.
Hanna realized her project during summer 2024 under the direct supervision of Fabian Hess and benefited from the collaborative MPB research atmosphere. We congratulate Hanna and express our appreciation for Hannas’ dedication to the project and her active participation to the group’s activities.
